Ben Askren is an American former professional mixed martial artist and amateur wrestler who had won the welterweight title, in August 2014, at ONE Championship, a Singapore-based mixed martial arts, Muay Thai, and kickboxing promotion. He had held the title for a record 1517 days and had given up the title only in October 2018 when he had decided to leave ONE Championship and join UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). Similarly, he had won the welterweight title, in October 2010, at Bellator MMA, an American mixed martial arts promotion. He had held the title for a record 1120 days and had only abdicated in November 2013 once he had decided to leave Bellator MMA and join ONE Championship. Besides MMA, he had also been a highly accomplished wrestler and representing the United States in freestyle wrestling, he had won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 2005 Guatemala City Pan American Championships and the 2009 Fort Lauderdale World Championships. He had also won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 2008 Las Vegas U.S. National Championships. Besides that, he was a world champion in submission wrestling as well. He eventually retired, in November 2019, after a storied career.

- He had taken to wrestling at a very young age and had won the state wrestling championship twice while he was studying at the Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wisconsin. He had played as an amateur wrestler at the University of Missouri as well. Later in life, he was appointed an assistant wrestling coach at Arizona State University.
- At the collegiate level, representing the Missouri Tigers, he had won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 2006 and the 2007 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. He had won the ‘Silver’ medal at the 2004 and 2005 editions of the tournament. He had also won 2 ‘Gold’ medals (2006 and 2007) and 2 ‘Silver’ medals at the (2004 and 2005) Big 12 Championships.
