John Salley studied at Canarsie High School located in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Canarsie in New York City and he played on the school’s basketball team.
After that, he enrolled at Georgia Tech‘s College of Management and graduated in 1988. During his time there, he helped his side win the 1985 ACC Championship while they also advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. In 1986, he left as Tech’s all-time leader in blocked shots. He also had his jersey number 22 retired, marking a rare honor in college basketball.

- In the 1986 NBA draft, he was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the first round.
- He became close friends with former professional basketball player Adrian Dantley after joining the Detroit Pistons and Dantley taught him proper nutrition, how to exercise, and how to conduct himself off the court. As a result, Salley used to call Dantley “The Teacher”.
- He was traded to the Miami Heat in 1992.
- John Salley was picked by the inaugural Toronto Raptors team in the 1995 NBA expansion draft. During his time with the team, he averaged 19.3 minutes and 6 points per game.
