    Ledisi Facts

    1. Ledisi’s first name means ‘to bring forth’ in Yoruba, a language spoken in West Africa by the ethnic Yoruba people.
    2. Her father had abandoned the family when she was a toddler and she did not have any contact with him for nearly 3 decades.
    3. Hailing from a family of singers, she had an early start in music and had started performing publicly with the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra when she was just 8 years old.
    4. She was initially very shy about her singing talent and would perform only upon being forced by other students in her gym class. They would often urge her to sing a particular track – Deniece Williams’ version of the song Black Butterfly (1984).
    5. In 1990, she was nominated for a Shellie Award for her performance in a production of the iconic musical The Wiz. She was just 18 at that time and had later performed in an extended run with the San Francisco cabaret troupe, Beach Blanket Babylon.
    6. Between 2008 and 2018, she had been nominated 12 times for a Grammy Award in 6 different categories. It was the 13th time lucky for her in 2026 when she won her first Grammy Award – in the category of ‘Best Traditional R&B Performance’ for the song Anything For You.
