The girl, Claire McAlpine, had written an entry in her diary stating that Blackburn had seduced her. The BBC claimed that McAlpine’s mother had reported this to them, and soon after, McAlpine sadly committed suicide.
At the time, the BBC alleged that Blackburn had been interviewed about the complaint, though Blackburn insisted that no interviews had taken place. Following his dismissal, Blackburn said the BBC had used him as an easy distraction while the broadcaster faced criticism over how it handled abuse allegations linked to Jimmy Savile.
Legal Response
In response, Blackburn’s lawyers wrote to BBC Director-General Tony Hall, warning that the statements they made about Blackburn during the inquiry could amount to defamation. Blackburn also argued that he had been dismissed not for misconduct but because his recollection of events from the 1970s was different from the BBC’s.
Following his departure, from the BBC and repeatedly stated that he was prepared to take legal action. However, the dispute was ultimately resolved in October 2016, after the BBC announced Blackburn would return as a presenter.
Importantly, the Dame Janet Smith review did not conclude that Blackburn had committed a sexual offence. The disagreement focused instead on the reliability of his evidence and the BBC’s handling of the historic complaint.
Philanthropy
Blackburn’s philanthropy has mainly focused on children’s charities and local community projects, and he has supported many charity appeals and fundraising events over the decades.
Over the years, Blackburn has given his time to high‑profile events, including those for Variety Children’s Charity, which raises funds for sick, disabled, and disadvantaged children. He also supports Independent Age, a charity that helps seniors living in poverty, and in 2014 and 2015, he returned to his roots as a DJ by hosting the event Soul Night Out. The live music event in Camden, London, helps raise money for the BBC’s Children in Need Charity.
In recognition of his services, (Order of the British Empire) in 2026 by King Charles III for his efforts in broadcasting and charity. Even though he is now in his eighties, Blackburn continues to work and has said he wants to keep being a familiar, supportive face for UK charities.
