    Vidit Gujrathi is an Indian chess player who is widely acknowledged as one of the finest chess players ever produced by the country. In January 2013, he had become just the 30th player from India to have attained the title of Grandmaster. In August 2017, he had become just the 4th Indian to have breached the magical 2700 Elo rating mark after , Krishnan Sasikiran, and . As of May 2026, he was the 2nd highest-rated player in India, only behind the legendary Viswanathan Anand. He was the captain of India’s ‘Gold’ medal-winning squad at the 2026 FIDE Online Chess Olympiad. He had also won the 2019 Biel Chess Festival Grandmaster tournament, finished as a runner-up at the 2026 Prague Chess Festival Masters tournament, and reached the quarter-final of the 2019 FIDE World Fischer Random Chess Championship. In January 2026, he achieved his peak position of 19 in the FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs) men’s world rankings. The same month, he achieved his peak FIDE rating of 2737.

    1. He had first come into the spotlight in 2006 when he had stood 2nd in the Asian Youth Championships in the under-12 category. He had, consequently, attained the title of FIDE Master.
    2. Vidit had achieved the title of International Master in 2008. The same year, he had won the World Youth Chess Championship in the open under-14 section, the first Indian to have achieved the feat.
    3. In 2009, he had stood 2nd in the under-16 category of the World Youth Chess Championship. In the 2011 World Junior Chess Championship, he had scored 8 points out of a possible 11 and attained his first Grandmaster norm.
    4. He had achieved his final Grandmaster norm by January 2013. In 2013, he also won the ‘Bronze’ medal at the World Junior Chess Championship in the under-20 category.
    5. At the Chess World Cup 2026, a 206-player single-elimination chess tournament that was held in Sochi, Russia, he was the best-performing Indian player. He had lost out to eventual champion Jan-Krzysztof Duda in the quarter-final stage of the tournament.
    6. In April 2026, he posted an elaborate note on social media announcing that he was retiring from the sport at the age of 27. The note had stated that he was not satisfied with his progress since August 2017 when he breached the magical 2700 Elo rating mark.
    7. The note had also mentioned that he was mentally tired due to all the traveling required to compete in events around the world, especially during the COVID-19 era which had necessitated mandatory quarantine periods. It was later revealed that this was a well-planned April Fools’ prank.
    8. He runs a self-titled YouTube channel where he regularly vlogs and posts chess-related content. The channel has amassed more than 250k subscribers.
